When you’re working out or playing sports, what do you drink to refuel yourself? Is it water or maybe Gatorade? Well it could be GoodSport. GoodSport is a dairy-based sports drink that professional athletes and elite competitors are taking by storm and is now launching in over 1,000 Walmart locations in the Midwest. Michelle McBride is the Founder and CEO of GoodSport and says this idea stemmed from watching her son play sports.
“I didn’t want my son drinking the sports drinks that were being given to him at his baseball games. They were filled with artificial ingredients and too much sugar. I had tried the natural sports drinks, but he didn’t like the taste.”
McBride researched and learned that milk is not only more hydrating than water but it’s more hydrating than sports drinks. She didn’t want her son to have to choose between a sports drink that works and something that was still nutritious. Thus, the idea for GoodSport was born.
GoodSport has received great support from the dairy industry including the Center For Dairy Research, Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, Midwest Dairy, and Dairy Management Inc (DMI). The Center For Dairy Research helped McBride to learn how to use ultra filtration to remove the protein and harness those electrolytes, creating the right balance of carbohydrates and B vitamins for milk to make a sports drink that’s clear, refreshing and thirst quenching.
Good sport has three times the electrolytes, 33% less sugar than traditional sports drinks, and it’s backed by scientific studies demonstrating that it works better than traditional sports drinks and water. With the support of DMI, GoodSport was sent for testing and peer review. Published studies show that GoodSport hydrates significantly better than the leading sports drink and provides rapid and long lasting hydration to improve exercise performance.
“We work with dairy processors to upcycle what the dairy industry refers to as milk permeate to make our sports drink,” explains McBride. “So we’re contributing to the sustainability efforts of the dairy industry and we’re creating real value in the food chain, not to mention a new source of revenue for dairy processors.”
GoodSport has come a long way from the initial prototype and is now being utilized by many NFL, NBA, WNBA and MLB teams. Farmers are also taking advantage of the benefits as they spend long days working on the farm.
Walmart took note of this growing popularity and reached out to McBride to create a partnership to have GoodSport in over 1,000 locations. GoodSport comes in four flavors and can be purchased by the bottle or case.
“I really appreciate the enthusiasm and support we’ve gotten from the dairy industry,” says McBride. “I really love to hear that, you know, everyday people within the industry love it as much as everyday people from out.”
