Not many people can say they have attended every World Dairy Expo since its start in 1967. But Tom Morris can. He is known as the auctioneer and manager of the World Classic Holstein Sale since 1989. He has also been a 56-year supporter of World Dairy Expo. Morris was honored as the Industry Person of the Year at this year’s Expo.
Starting from a young age, his family has been involved in the dairy industry, laying the foundation for his future. For over 30 years, he has ran Cattle Connection, showcasing dairy cattle and creating partnerships with various animals. The industry has evolved, presenting its fair share of challenges. However, he credits the staff, directors, and the industry’s pioneers for adapting to these changes, and supporting the success and growth of the industry.
Morris and his wife Sandy developed more than 200 Excellent cows and held three complete dispersals during the 1980s. Each of these had the highest average in the USA for the year. Owners and operators of Tom Morris Ltd., the couple has managed over 500 dispersals and consignment sales.
From the introduction of indexing to the sale of the first ever clone at a public auction, he has been at the forefront of these developments. His contributions have extended beyond national border. Morris has facilitated the importation of live dairy cattle from Europe, a feat that had not been achieved since the early 1900s.
“My accomplishments are not due to my individual endeavors but reflect the collaborative efforts of a dedicated team,” explains Morris. “Whether it be in publishing or organizing sales, I had a team around me that played a key role in my success.”
His journey in the industry has been marked by dedication, adaptability, and collaboration. From his early involvement to his current achievements, he has demonstrated a commitment to the industry’s growth and success. It is this passion and collective efforts that have earned him the esteemed recognition as the Industry Person of the Year.
