After more than 33 years as faculty staff, and 11 as the Dean of the UW School for Veterinary Medicine, Mark Markel has announced he’ll be stepping down next summer.
Markel has successful ushered a major expansion on campus. The expansion includes a new building located in what was Lot 62. The addition and renovation will allow the school to offer more research space and labs, plus improve serving animal patients and students.
According to UW Provost, Charles Isbell, they are currently coordinating a committee made of campus leadership that will initiate the search process for Markel’s successor.
Markel intends to remain as faculty on staff. He is also embarking on an international leadership experience as the incoming president of the AO Foundation, headquartered in Switzerland. According to their website, the AO Foundation is a medically-guided, not-for-profit organization, a global network of surgeons, and the world’s leading education, innovation, and research organization specializing in the surgical treatment of trauma and musculoskeletal disorders. Markel will be the first veterinarian to ever serve as president.
