The National Agricultural Statistics Service will survey producers in Wisconsin for its 2023 County Agricultural Production Survey and Sep. 1 Agricultural Survey.
The agency is taking a comprehensive look into the 2023 production and supply of small grains,
including wheat, oats, barley, and rye.
NASS will contact producers to get information on their 2023 production and the quantities of commodities stored on the farm. The surveys will ask for total acres planted and harvested, and yield and production of small grains crops.
Wisconsin Statistician Greg Bussler says without this survey data, agencies such as USDA’s Risk Management Agency and Farm Service Agency do not have the info they need to base farm programs.
“The data provided will help federal and state programs support the farmer,” Bussler says. “I hope every producer understands the importance of these data and will take the time to respond if they receive this survey. Producers can lose out when there are no data to determine accurate rates for loans, disaster payments, crop insurance price elections, and more.”
Farmers can respond online (agcounts.usda.gov) or by mail. NASS representatives may reach out to producers who have not responded by Aug. 30.
NASS safeguards the privacy of all respondents, as required by federal law. The agency publishes only aggregate data, so that no one can identify an individual operation or producer.
NASS will publish state and national data in the annual Small Grains Summary and quarterly Grain Stocks reports Sep. 29 on the NASS website (nass.usda.gov). County-level survey results will be published on the NASS Quick Stats database (quickstats.nass.usda.gov) on Dec. 15.
