The Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association is celebrating 30 years of promoting, supporting and advocating for agricultural tourism. WATA started in 1993 to respond to growing consumer curiosity about the people behind their food, fuel and fiber.
“Today’s consumers are often five generations removed from farming,” says Sylvia Burgos Toftness, WATA
Board President.
Surveys show consumers want to visit farms and shake the hand that feeds them. More growers are tapping into this demand by developing creative ways to educate consumers while providing engaging and memorable experiences. This fosters additional revenue stream at fruit and vegetable farms, you-pick operations, vineyards, tree farms, livestock farms and more. In turn, it helps fuel future generations on the farm.
WATA offers practical information, peer-to-peer connections, and policy advocacy to help growers build success as ag tourism destinations.
“Today, agricultural tourism is a growing economic engine in Wisconsin and all across the country because it meets both consumer and farmer demands,” says WATA Executive Director Sheila Everhart. “For three decades, we’ve worked to help consumers and farmers find one another in agricultural settings that are fun, educational, relaxing and delicious.”
