The bipartisan AM for Every Vehicle Act passed the Senate Commerce Committee. The legislation says automakers must maintain AM broadcast radio in new vehicles at no additional charge.
Reports of automakers removing AM radio from vehicles has pushed broadcasters, lawmakers and listeners to raise awareness. Farm news, weather and sports are just a few of the reasons more than 80 million Americans depend on radio.
The AM For Every Vehicle Act Would:
- Require automakers maintain AM broadcast radio in their vehicles without extra charge.
- Require any automaker that sells vehicles without access to AM broadcast radio before the effective date of the NHTSA regulation to clearly disclose to consumers that the vehicle lacks access to AM broadcast radio.
- Study whether alternative communication systems could fully replicate the reach and effectiveness of AM broadcast radio for alerting the public to emergencies.
U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin is a cosponsor of the bill, which is both bipartisan and bicameral. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel and Commissioner Nathan Simington, the National Association of Broadcasters, and National Association of Farm Broadcasters endorse the bill.
