County Fair season is in full swing! There are several county fairs taking place throughout the state this week. With temperatures hovering in the upper 80’s and well into the 90’s, how heat will affect the fair is a concern.
How livestock will fair in the heat is a concern for exhibitors and fair volunteers alike. Mark Gunn has been serving as the Swine Superintendent at the Rock County 4-H Fair for 45 years. He has experienced heat waves during the fair before and says that the fair is the best place for the animals to be.
According to Gunn, exhibitors “know that they need to make sure they maintain and take care of their animals here.” Gunn points out that there are resources at the fair to keep animals cool or help if any health issues arise. “We have a wash rack and we have a veterinarian service that’s very much available at anytime if we have an animal that gets sick,” said Gunn.
Ryan George has been serving on the Rock County 4-H Fair Board for 12 years and is currently the Fair Board President. He say’s that Rock County is used to the heat given their date at the end of July. While some are concerned about the effects on livestock, George’s main concern is for the fair attendees.
George said, “I’m more worried about the fair goers. They got to drink water, they got to find some shade. Don’t be afraid because of the heat to come out to the fair.”
The Rock County 4-H Fair runs from Tuesday July 25th to Sunday July 30th.
