There are countless programs for young agriculturalists to become involved in. Many programs have opportunities for individuals to highlight their farms or career. One of those programs is the Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer Program.
The Outstanding Young Farmer program began 7 decades ago in Wisconsin with the Jaycees organization. Farmers between the ages of 21-40 have the opportunity to apply for the Outstanding Young Farmer Award.
Cindy Matton serves on the programs steering committee. When asked how many usually apply, Matton said, “we have anywhere from 15-30.” It is then narrowed down to 8-12 finalists.
Judging criteria is based on progress in agriculture, the extent of soil and water conservation practices, and involvement in the community. The qualifications have remained the same since the beginning, the only change has been extending the age.
The state winner is nominated for the national award. The top 10 finalists receive an all expenses paid trip to the national program and are eligible for a cash bonus if they win.
Matton has witnessed the program grow in recent years. “I do feel that some of our younger farmers are finally realizing the importance of getting out there and letting people know what agriculture is all about and what their farms can do for their communities”, said Matton.
