Wisconsin winter wheat and oat production are seeing double-digit losses in the latest production forecast from USDA’s National Agriculture Statistics Service.
Winter wheat production is down 14 percent from last year. Wisconsin’s winter wheat is forecast at 16.2 million bushels. It was 18.7 million bushels in 2022. Based on conditions as of July 1, the state’s winter wheat yield is forecast at 66 bushels per acre, 12 bushels below last year.
Wisconsin winter wheat growers intend to harvest 245,000 acres for grain, up 2 percent from 2022.
Looking at the entire U.S., winter wheat production is up 9 percent from 2022. Yield is forecast at 46.9 bushels per acre, putting Wisconsin above average in terms of yield.
Meanwhile, oat production is down 45 percent. Wisconsin oats are forecast at 2.64 million bushels. Growers produced 4.81 million bushels in 2022.The expected yield is 44 bushels per acre, down 30 bushels from 2022.
Wisconsin oat growers intend to harvest 60,000 acres for grain, down 5,000 acres from last year.
Across the U.S., oat production is forecast down 13 percent from 2022. Yield is forecast at 62.8 bushels per acre, 2 bushes below 2022’s average yield.
The forecasts in this report are based on July 1 conditions and do not reflect weather effects since that time. The next crop production forecasts, based on conditions as of Aug. 1, will be released on Aug. 11.
