More than a dozen Wisconsin natives and students join 41 from across the U.S. in getting a total of $48,500 in scholarships from the National Dairy Shrine. NDS will recognize these young dairy leaders at the awards banquet on Oct. 2 in Madison.
Ashley Hagenow of Poynette gets the $2,000 Senior Student Recognition Scholarship. This award recognizes outstanding leadership, activity participation, academic ability and a sincere interest in the dairy industry. The universities nominate students. Hagenow earned a degree from the University of Minnesota. She currently serves as the 76th Alice in Dairyland.
The $1,000 award winners of the Senior Student Recognition Scholarship include UW-Madison students Clarissa Gross and Sophy Henisz.
The $1,000 award winners of the Merton Sowerby Junior Merit Scholarships include UW-Madison students Gracelyn Krahn, Elise Bleck and Nicole Broege. These scholarships are in honor of Merton Sowerby, a National Dairy Shrine Pioneer and former Klussendorf winner from Michigan.
California native and UW-Madison student Kylie Konyn got the top honor — $1,500 — for the Mike Lancaster Sophomore Merit Scholarships. Former NDS Distinguished Dairy Cattle Breeder and Klussendorf winner, Mike Lancaster, of Washington, is the namesake.
The $1,000 award winners of the NDS / DMI Education & Communication Scholarships include Natalie Roe. The National Dairy Shrine and Dairy Management Inc. established these scholarships to support sophomore and junior level students pursuing education or communication careers in the dairy or food-related industries.
Similarly, DMI and the Dairy Shrine have the Milk Marketing and Dairy Products Scholarships. These encourage students to pursue careers in the marketing of milk or dairy products, dairy product development, quality control, nutrition or related roles in the dairy and food industries. The $1,500 honoree is Eliza Endres of Waunakee. She is enrolled at the University of Minnesota. Ashlyn Sarbacker at UW-Platteville is one of the $1,000 award winners.
UW-Madison student Clarissa Ulness earned the $1,000 Maurice Core Scholarship. The friends of Maurice Core, longtime Executive Secretary of the American Jersey Cattle Association and former Dairy Shrine Secretary/Executive Director donated the funds for these awards.
UW-Madison student Lauren Breunig got one of the Marshall McCullough Communications $1,000 Scholarships. Marshall McCullough was a respected nutrition researcher, educator and journalist from Georgia.
Fox Valley Technical College student Samuel Mess got a $1,000 award from the Iager Scholarship. The Charles Iager family of Fulton, MD donated the funds that established these scholarships.
