Wisconsin will be receiving 1 billion in funding to support expanding broadband infrastructure in Wisconsin. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin is responsible for administering the money that the state is receiving.
In an effort to better understand where there is the most need, the commission has launched a Wisconsin Internet Self-Report Survey for residents to share their internet quality. The survey can be taken online or over the phone for those who have connection issues.
Alyssa Kenney is the Wisconsin Broadband and Digital Equity Director for the Public Service Commission. Survey responses received so far have revealed where the greatest issues may lie. “There are unfortunately a lot of what I would call stragglers” said Kenney. Those stragglers would include homeowners who have neighbors with connection while they don’t due to decisions from previous homeowners.
Kenney expects all the money will be used and the infrastructure in place by 2030. When asked why it could take another 7 years to complete, Kenney said “Wisconsin has a somewhat short construction season for some of the technologies.” That and installation across the nation means competition for supply and workforce which could lead to delays.
