Rain in portions of the state helped ease some effects of drought. However, dry conditions throughout most of the state continue to negatively impact crop growth and conditions, according to the latest crop progress report from USDA.
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service says topsoil moisture condition in Wisconsin rated 37 percent very short, 36 percent short and 27 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture condition rated 24 percent very short, 40 percent short and 36 percent adequate.
Ninety-eight percent of the corn crop has emerged, a week ahead of last year and eight days ahead of the 5-year average. Corn condition was 42 percent good to excellent, down 8 percent from last week.
Ninety-seven percent of the soybean crop has emerged, six days ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of the average. Soybean condition was 45 percent good to excellent, down 7 percent from last week.
Seventy percent of the oat crop headed. That’s 11 days ahead of last year and nine days ahead of the average. Oat coloring was at 18 percent. Oat condition was 45 percent good to excellent, down 3 percent from last week.
Ninety-three percent of winter wheat headed. Winter wheat coloring was at 37 percent, four days ahead of last year and three days ahead of the average. Winter wheat condition rated 49 percent good to excellent statewide, up 1 percent from last week.
The second cutting of alfalfa is 24 percent complete, four days ahead of last year and five days ahead of the average. All hay condition is 40 percent good to excellent statewide, down 3 percent from last week.
Pasture condition rated 38 good to excellent statewide, down 1 percent from last week.
