Henry Koerner of the Big Foot FFA is a Wisconsin Star in Agriscience Winner.
FFA members in Wisconsin have a chance to apply for a Star Award across four categories. One of the categories is Star in Agriscience.
For his Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), Koerner wanted to find solutions for hot issues in a variety of AFNR pathways. In regard to the plant science realm, he analyzed the effects of natural antimicrobials on plant tissue growth. He found that the cultures with honey and no added antimicrobials produced the most growth.
Additionally, through his biotechnology research project, he concluded that the enzyme solution with the highest concentration was able to extract the most DNA from an onion. During the four years of Koerner’s SAE, he has had numerous other research projects including comparing the effects of various milk types used in the cheesemaking process on protein presence.
“My favorite research project I’ve done so far is utilizing poultry feces bacteria as a bioremediation agent of oil,” he says.
In the future, he plans to attend the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities to obtain a degree in Agriculture Education.
Koerner’s parents are Tyson and Emma Koerner. His advisor is Lisa Konkel.
