Every FFA member has the opportunity to participate in a Supervised Agricultural Experience. Ashton Brusveen, an FFA member from the Randolph Cambria Friesland FFA Chapter, started his own seed cleaning business as his Supervised Agricultural Experience and has found great success in building a customer base while excelling in FFA. And he is only going into his junior year of high school!
Ashton began his journey by renting 25 acres of land from his grandfather for his grain production proficiency. He is a 3rd generation family farmer that helps his family on their 1,300 acre farm where they plant primarily corn and soybeans, sometimes rye and wheat.
A local farmer told Ashton that he needed 3,000 acres of seed cleaned. Ashton’s grandfather said they had the equipment to clean the seed which is what started his journey.
The business began to takeoff after Ashton shared what he was doing on social media. Ashton said, “saying that I was in FFA really motivated people and they were really interested in what I did” and his customer base has grown.
Ashton came in 3rd for the Grain Production Proficiency at the Wisconsin State FFA Convention. His hope is to continue doing better over the next two years in high school and someday apply for the National Star Farmer award.
