Over the past week, widespread precipitation and colder than normal temperatures limited fieldwork to nearly two suitable days, according to the latest report from USDA. The agency also got reports of snow still on the ground as well as flooding in some northern areas.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service reports spring tillage was 13 percent complete, six days ahead of last year but three days behind the 5-year average.
Corn planting was 1 percent complete, five days ahead of last year but three days behind the average. Fifteen percent of the expected oat crop has been planted, eight days ahead of last year but three days behind the average. Potato planting was reported as 13 percent complete, a day ahead of last year but a day behind the average.
Winter wheat condition was rated 74 percent good to excellent statewide, up 9 percent from last week.
Pasture condition was rated 47 good to excellent statewide, up 4 percent from last week.
Manure hauling was done as conditions allowed. Topsoil moisture condition rated 2 percent short, 68 percent adequate and 30 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 2 percent short, 72 percent adequate and 26 percent surplus.
