Wisconsin farmers intend to plant 3.95 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2023 according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service prospective plantings report. This is unchanged from 2022.
Producers intend to plant 2.3 million acres of soybeans in Wisconsin this year. This is 140,000 acres higher than 2022.
Farmers in Wisconsin expect to harvest 1.03 million acres of all dry hay for the 2023 crop year. This is
70,000 acres below last year.
Wisconsin farmers intend to plant 175,000 acres of oats for all purposes. This is up 35,000 acres from last year. Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 290,000 acres, down 15,000 acres from last year. Wisconsin farmers intend to plant 18,000 acres of barley, up 4,000 acres from last year.
This report gives the first official, survey-based estimates of U.S. farmers’ 2023 planting intentions. NASS’ acreage estimates are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March from a sample of approximately 72,900 farm operators across the U.S. with more than 2,100 from Wisconsin. Actual plantings will depend upon weather, economic conditions and the availability of production inputs at the time producers make their final planting decisions.
Looking at the entire U.S., corn planted area for all purposes in 2023 is estimated at 92 million acres, up 4 percent or 3.42 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 40 of the 48 estimating states.
Soybean planted area for 2023 is estimated at 87.5 million acres, up slightly from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 15 of the 29 estimating states.
All wheat planted area for 2023 is estimated at 49.9 million acres, up 9 percent from 2022. The 2023 winter wheat planted area, at 37.5 million acres, is up 13 percent from last year and up 2 percent from the previous estimate.
