The 2022 wrap for grain production and stocks from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is in.
The Crop Production 2022 Summary estimates corn for grain production in Wisconsin at 545 million bushels. Current year production was up 1 percent from the previous year’s 540 million bushels. Wisconsin’s corn for grain yield was estimated at 180 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 3.03 million acres, 30,000 acres above 2021. Corn planted for all purposes in 2022 was estimated at 3.95 million acres.
Corn for silage production was estimated at 19.8 million tons, up 5 percent from 2021. The silage yield estimate of 22.5 tons per acre was up 1.0 ton per acre from 2021. Producers harvested 880,000 acres of corn for silage, unchanged from 2021.
Corn stored in all positions in Wisconsin on Dec. 1 totaled 415 million bushels, down 4 percent from 2021, according to the latest Grain Stocks report from USDA NASS. Of the total stocks, 60 percent were stored on-farm. The September-November indicated disappearance totaled 202 million bushels, 23 percent above the 164 million bushels from the same quarter the previous year.
Soybean production was estimated at 116 million bushels in 2022. This was up 2 percent from last year’s
114 million bushels. The Wisconsin soybean crop yielded 54 bushels per acre in 2022. The harvested acreage of 2.15 million was up 80,000 acres from 2021. Soybean planted acreage, at 2.16 million, was up 60,000 acres from 2021.
Soybeans stored in all positions in Wisconsin on Dec. 1 totaled 89.5 million bushels, up 4 percent from 2021. Of the total stocks, 31 percent were stored on-farm. Indicated disappearance for September-November 2022 was 34.4 million bushels, 5 percent above the 32.7 million bushels from the same quarter the previous year.
Wisconsin on-farm storage capacity on Dec.1 was 380 million bushels, unchanged from 2021. Wisconsin’s 315 off-farm storage facilities had a storage capacity of 405 million bushels, unchanged from the previous year. As of Dec. 1, Wisconsin had a total of 785 million bushels of storage capacity.
Potato production for 2022 was estimated at 27.9 million cwt, down 4 percent from 2021. Producers averaged 420 cwt per acre, down 2 percent from the 2021 yield. Planted and harvested acres were estimated at 67,000 acres and 66,500 acres, respectively.
