Wisconsin got its first widespread snowfall of the season last week, limiting the amount of fall tillage and corn harvest that was able to get done. It left farmers with just 3.5 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The precipitation didn’t raise soil moistures — topsoil moisture condition rated 82 percent adequate to surplus, the same as last week. Subsoil moisture condition rated 80 percent adequate to surplus, down 1 percentage point from last week.
Harvest of corn for grain is in the final stretch at 77 percent complete. That’s 12 days behind last year but even with the 5-year average. Moisture content of corn harvested for grain was 19 percent.
Winter wheat emerged was at 95 percent. Winter wheat condition was rated 83 percent good to excellent
statewide, down 1 percentage point from last week.
Fall tillage was 77 percent complete, three days behind last year.
The final crop progress report comes out Nov. 28.
