Unseasonably warm temperatures and dry conditions early last week helped many farmers wrap up the soybean harvest. Meanwhile, heavy weekend rains slowed down the corn harvest and other fall fieldwork.
This is according to the latest crop progress and condition report from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Looking at moisture — topsoil moisture condition rated 82 percent adequate to surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 81 percent adequate to surplus.
Harvest of corn for grain was 55 percent complete, nine days behind last year but a day ahead of the 5-year average. Moisture content of corn harvested for grain was 20 percent. Corn condition was 79 percent good to excellent statewide, down 1 percentage point from last week.
The soybean harvest was 95 percent complete, four days ahead of last year.
Winter wheat emerged was at 88 percent, three days behind last year but 13 days ahead of the average. Winter wheat condition was rated 82 percent good to excellent statewide, down 1 percentage point from last week.
And fall tillage was 59 percent complete, a day behind last year but 11 days ahead of the average.
