Many times in Wisconsin, the loss of a family farm makes headlines. The reasons the farms leave range and can be quite complicated. But what if a family farm exits – just like their business plan directed?
On November 4th, JenEhr Farm will officially cease to exist – by design. Wilkinson Auction of Muscoda has been enlisted to help. Some equipment’s already been sold, business relationships involving produce delivery have ended, and the physical event of a live auction will ultimately seal the deal.
I’ve been a personal friend of Paul Ehrhardt and Kay Jensen since college. We had kitchen table discussions about their planned transition into production agriculture more than 26 years ago. It was all by design. So it comes as no surprise to me that their retirement from production agriculture and sale of their farm is by design as well.
They joined me in studio to share their strategy and stories. The two had become familiar faces in organic food production in southern Wisconsin with hundreds of people flocking to their Sun Prairie area location for weekly CSA pick-ups, or seeing “Farmer Paul” at local farmer’s markets.
As with any major life adjustment – there’s going to be some grief. Paul and Kay have already committed to spending at least six months taking it all in.
