The results are in from the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival’s Pen of 3 Carcass Competition. The contest was held Sept. 11 during the show at Jefferson County Fair Park.
The competition is an opportunity for sheep producers, including 4-H and FFA members, to receive both a live evaluation by a commercial lamb buyer and indexing measurements taken after harvest to determine loin eye, back fat, and leg score to assist them with genetic, breeding and feeding decisions for their respective flocks.
Judges included John Kane of Raising Kane Livestock, Steve Pinnow of Pinn-Oak, and Alex Abal of ASALAH food pantry. The trio assisted with the discussion regarding the current view of the lamb market.
UW-Madison’s Meat Science & Animal Biologics Discovery assisted in collecting and disseminating information to producers to help with decisions regarding their respective flocks.
In the live placings, Randy Cutler of Cutler Country Comfort in Miladore got first place in Pen #1 with his
Blue Faced Leicester Wether lambs. Paul and Lori Abel of Arpin took second place in Pen #3. They brought Hampshire Suffolk Cross Wether lambs. In third place was Ralph Giorno in Pen #2 with his Commercial Wether Lambs out of Whitewater.
In the harvested placings, first place went to Giorno in Pen #2. Second place was a close second, according to the judges, and went to the Abels in Pen #3. And third place went to Miladore in Pen #1.
Mark your calendars for the next Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival Sept. 8-10, 2023.
