Rex Moseley is the 90 year old owner of Rex Moseley’s Fruit and Vegetable Farm in Warrens. Each year he donates a semi load of apples to food pantries. He shares more about this event each year, but first we talk about his operation.
Moseley got started farming in 1969 when he took over the farm from his parents and began with just selling cabbage. He then began planting 500 apple trees and now has over 6,000 trees with 12 different varieties on his 30 acres.
“The number of wholesalers I have used has changed over time and I now only have 2 that I use today,” says Moseley.
In 2000, Moseley began donating apples to food pantries such as the Midwest Food Bank. He gives out a semi load or more which is equal to about 1000 bushels a year. This year being one of his best growing seasons he is expecting that number to increase.
This year he is picking apples to be donated on October 22, beginning at 9am. There will be about 50-100 people volunteering however he “can always use more.”
“Last year we picked 700 bushels in just the morning to be shipped out,” adds Moseley. “There are approximately 100 apples in every bushel so I have given away over 17,000 bushels.”
If you are interested in helping pick apples, you can go to his farm at 23933 Cortland Ave. Warrens, WI. He has the supplies needed and will be feeding volunteers chili as a thank you as well as they get to enjoy the apples themselves.
