Dry conditions are helping farmers make rapid progress on harvesting soybeans and corn for silage, according to the latest crop progress report from USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 73 percent adequate. Subsoil moisture condition rated 75 percent adequate.
Fourth cutting of hay wrapped up on most farms across the state. The fourth cutting of alfalfa was reported at 97 percent complete, two days ahead of last year.
Pasture condition was rated 58 percent good to excellent statewide, down 8 percentage points from last week. Fall tillage was 26 percent complete, a day behind last year, but 10 days ahead of average.
Corn for silage harvest was at 77 percent complete, two weeks behind last year and a day behind the five-year average.
Harvest of corn for grain was 7 percent complete, four days behind last year but a day ahead of the average. Corn condition was 78 percent good to excellent statewide, down 1 percentage point from last week. Ninety-seven percent of corn had reached the dent state. Eighty-five percent of corn was mature, three days behind last year but 10 days ahead of the average.
Soybean condition was 75 percent good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week. Soybeans dropping leaves was at 92 percent. Soybean harvest was 37 percent complete, three days behind last year but four days ahead of the average.
Potatoes harvested was at 78 percent, a day behind both last year and the average.
Winter wheat planted was at 77 percent, three days ahead of last year and 10 days ahead of the average. Winter wheat emerged was at 46 percent, a day ahead of last year and four days ahead of the average.
