This past week, some farmers started harvesting corn for silage and some producers started planting winter wheat, according to the latest crop progress report from USDA.
Both corn and soybean conditions are looking brighter than last week. Corn condition was 78 percent good to excellent statewide, up 2 percentage points from last week. Soybean condition was 78 percent good to excellent, up 4 percentage points from last week.
This is after topsoil moisture condition rated 86 percent adequate or surplus. And subsoil moisture condition rated 75 percent adequate or surplus.
Corn in the dough stage or beyond was 86 percent, three days behind last year but three days ahead of the 5-year average. Forty-four percent of corn had reached the dent state, seven days behind last year and a day behind the average.
Soybeans setting pods was 95 percent, five days behind last year but a day ahead of the average. Leaves were turning color on 15 percent of the state’s soybean acreage, eight days behind last year and five days behind the average.
The oat harvest is nearing the finish line with 91 percent off the ground. That’s a day behind last year but five days ahead of the average.
Potatoes harvested was at 27 percent, six days behind last year and three days behind the average. Potato condition was 96 percent good to excellent, up 1 percentage point from last week.
All hay condition was reported 77 percent good to excellent condition, down 3 percentage points from last week. The third cutting of alfalfa was reported at 95 percent complete, five days ahead of last year and a week ahead of the average. The fourth cutting was 52 percent complete, two days ahead of last year and six days ahead of the average.
Pasture condition was rated 71 percent good to excellent, down 1 percentage point from last week.
