Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) introduced H.R. 8592, the Guaranteeing Robust Agricultural Independence and Nutrition for America Act, also known as the GRAIN for America Act. This legislation would place a 1-year moratorium on the enrollment of farmland in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), which pays farmers to leave land uncultivated. After the 1-year moratorium, H.R. 8592 would prevent prime farmland from being enrolled in the CRP.
“If this past year has taught us anything, it’s that we need to secure America’s food supply, not pay farmers not to farm,” says Congressman Tiffany. “We cannot have a sustainable future if we have no food production.”
Congressman Tiffany shares more on what the GRAIN for America Act is and how it will impact Wisconsin farmers.
Background:
Last year, the Biden administration expanded the CRP in a green fantasy attempt to achieve net-zero emissions. The CRP is a program under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that offers farmers 10- to 15-year payment contracts for taking some or all of their farmland out of crop cultivation.
Congressman Tiffany’s GRAIN for America Act would not impact farmland that is already part of the CRP. Additionally, farmers who already have land in the CRP can re-enroll during the moratorium
