The seed industry has its sights set on the upcoming growing season and beyond all throughout the year. With challenges spanning from supply chain disruptions to biotechnology regulations, the industry must find new solutions to continue to carry out crop production as usual.
Janae Brady leads government affairs for the American Seed Trade Association. She details some of the issues that are top of mind for the association.
Brady says that one of the top priorities for the association is working to limit regulation of biotechnology. Processes such as gene editing can help to fight food insecurity and food waste, but some parts of the world hold strict regulations on those technologies.
Some other issues that the association has set its sights on include engaging in potential labor negotiations for Pacific Northwest port disruptions, ensuring that supply chain issues don’t affect the industry, and factoring sustainability into seed production.
“It’s important [to] go back all the way to the seed. Seed is where it all begins,” adds Brady. “Putting the right seed in the ground … [can] have positive impacts on our health, on our soil, and on the food that we’re actually producing for everyone”
