Supply chain issues have caused local florists to make some changes and pull out creative tricks to face one of the busiest wedding seasons in decades.
Tami Gasch is the President of the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Florists Association as well as the owner of Brillion Blooms in Brillion. She shares how supply shortages and wild weather in Central and South America, Africa, and Western Europe have made it difficult to source certain flowers and supplies.
Gasch says that certain flowers will be difficult to get ahold of this year. These include hydrangeas due to heavy rains as well as white and earth tone roses due to the high demand.
Aside from the flowers, certain floral supplies such as floral foam and floral glue are hard for florists to get their hands on. Gasch says that some florists may stockpile these supplies in anticipation of a shortage, which makes it difficult for other florists to get those supplies.
To combat the shortages, Gasch explains that florists may go back to the “old-fashioned” ways of doing things. One such example is using wire and floral tape to make corsages instead of floral glue. She shares that florists are creative and will do what it takes to get their customers what they need.
