Dogs are known for providing companionship to humans and other animals, but some dog breeds are notorious for being hard workers. Certain dog breeds have a herding instinct and can be trained to help manage livestock on a farm or ranch.
Lori Perry is the President of the Wisconsin Working Stock Dog Association, and she shares more about working dogs and the trial competitions that they can compete in each summer.
According to Perry, working dogs are born with a natural instinct to herd and work. However, if that instinct is not maintained through training and handling, it can be lost in the matter of a couple generations. She says that it is important to see the parents of a puppy working before purchasing a puppy to train for working.
Perry also mentions that the WWSDA holds trials throughout the summer months, with one of their biggest trials being held over Labor Day weekend in Hudson. She explains that it takes many hands to hold the trials so that the dogs have a chance to show off their skills.
