Tobacco is a rarity in Wisconsin, but there are still a handful of producers who take pride in raising the crop. Some of the younger producers are recognized for their hard work through the Specialty Crop Production Proficiency in FFA.
Leah Huchthausen, a senior from Stoughton High School, was named the Wisconsin FFA Specialty Crop Production Proficiency winner at this year’s Wisconsin FFA Convention. Huchthausen raises tobacco, and she shares how the crop is looking this year. She also details the process of becoming a State Proficiency Finalist.
Huchthausen says that the crop is looking good for the year, and she is hoping to wrap up planting in the next week. She also explained that tobacco is a very labor intensive crop, but she is proud to take part in every stage of the production process.
Looking forward, Huchthausen hopes to continue raising tobacco after high school so that she can keep the tradition alive.
