Four Wisconsin farmers who planted corn hybrids earned top recognition in the 2021 National Corn Yield Contest, including two first-place victories. Overall, the farmers won four places across three different irrigation and production types statewide in the annual contest conducted by the National Corn Growers Association.
The top finishers included:
No-Till Irrigated
- First place: Matt Hintz of Amherst yielded 245.7463 bu/A with Golden Harvest corn G95M41-5122 E-Z Refuge brand.
- Second place: John Ruzicka of Bancroft yielded 227.146 bu/A with Golden Harvest corn G03R40-5222 E-Z Refuge brand.
Strip-Till, includes Minimum-Till, Mulch-Till and Ridge-Till, Irrigated
- First place: John Stasiak of Holmen yielded 250.6965 bu/A with Golden Harvest corn G03R40-5222 E-Z Refuge brand.
No-Till Non-Irrigated
- Second place: Steve Wilkens of Random Lake yielded 315.3779 bu/A with Golden Harvest corn G02K39-5122 E-Z Refuge brand.
Wilkens, a Golden Harvest agronomy manager, advises corn farmers to experiment with a subset of their acres in order to identify yield responsive factors and optimize yield potential.
“I encourage farmers to think outside the box to push product performance and yield,” he says. “Attention to detail, continual learning and fine-tuning practices are paramount to raising high-yield corn. Once yield responsive factors have been identified and are repeatable across years and hybrids, farmers can implement more broadly across their farms.”
