Ancestral by Dan Smith tells the story of his passion for agriculture through a series of poems written over his 40 year career.
After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dan returned home to his family’s dairy farm in northwestern Illinois. His family made the difficult decision to liquidate the family farming operation and move back to the Madison area after farming for 30 years.
Dan Smith is now the CEO of Cooperative Network and has published his third book, via Water’s Edge Press, called Ancestral.
Drawing on stories from farmers through his time as a financial advisor for the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and through his experience on the family farm that is familiar to many, Dan shared the story of those who were forced to or wanted to change how they live when farming is no longer sustainable.
Dan says Ancestral not only reflects on how hard farmers work because of their passion for the industry, but also resonates with many different people regardless of their involvement in the agriculture industry.
