Perhaps when you think of fall, you think of pumpkins, apple cider and combines in the corn field. Well, add cranberries to that list.
Cool, crisp fall air means that the cranberry harvest is underway. Wisconsin is No. 1 in the nation for cranberry production, providing half of the world’s cranberry supply. Cranberry production has been happening in America’s Dairyland since before Wisconsin was a state, says the 74th Alice in Dairyland Julia Nunes.
Nunes spends the month of September and into October touting the state’s reputation as a cranberry powerhouse with 250 growers and more than 21,000 acres of land. The red fruit brings in over $1 billion in economic activity to Wisconsin.
Nunes says cranberries are also an example of environmental, social and economic sustainability in agriculture.
