After a week of above normal heat in the first week of June and now again in the beginning of July we are working on heat abatement. Heat abatement is the reduction or lessening of heat stress. We as farmers try to keep our cows cool for multiple reasons and in multiple ways.
Reasons why:
1. Welfare of the animals
2. Hold production
3. Health of the animal
4. Comfortable cows keep us profitable
How do we cool cows?
1. Mechanically – With the use of fans.
2. Sprinkler systems that use cold water. Sprinklers in combination with the air moving over the cows achieves evaporative cooling
3. Nutritionally – With the feed additive called Hydrolac, which is a source of blended electrolytes, multiple energy sources, minerals, vitamins, and osmolytes. This as of late has been our farm’s favorite and most cost beneficial tool.
