The corn continues to look good around the country.
This week’s U.S. Department of Agriculture Crop Progress Report ranks the crop 72 percent in good to excellent condition, with Iowa and Minnesota corn rated 85 percent good to excellent.
The national soybean crop is 96 percent planted, with the crop rated 72 percent in good to excellent condition; the crops in Iowa and Minnesota are rated above 80 percent.
The report also shows the winter wheat harvest is moving ahead, with 29 percent of the crop already combined.
Wisconsin highly with Iowa and Minnesota regarding quality of the early crop: the state’s corn is rated 80 percent good to excellent this week and that’s down a couple percentage points from last week.
Wisconsin soybeans all are planted, with 93 percent of the plants emerged. The crop is rated 82 percent in good to excellent condition.
Other Wisconsin crops’ reports include 40 percent of the oats headed, with the crop rated 81 percent good to excellent condition. The winter wheat is 74 percent headed, with 75 percent of the crop rated in good to excellent condition.
The Wisconsin fall potato crop is rated 94 percent in good to excellent condition.
Wisconsin farmers also are about done making their first-crop hay, with 92 percent of the crop harvested — 16 days ahead of last year. The first crop was rated 72 percent good to excellent.
The Wisconsin topsoil moisture this week is considered 91 percent adequate to surplus and 9 percent short, with the direst areas in southeastern parts of the state.
