An old friend from Clark County predicted last week that they’d be going full-throttle on planting crops this week, and it appears only colder-than-normal weather might be the only issue.
Much of the crop on the western side of the state — especially those along the ridges and coulees of the northern Driftless Area — are nearing completion, which makes it somewhat surprising to some to know that land to in the eastern part of the WAXX 104.5 region is a little further behind.
But that’s the way it always seems to be, but for some exceptional planting seasons. The heavy, less-hilly soils in areas such as Clark and Wood counties generally are a few days behind the west where planting is concerned. It’s a fact that’s simply accepted, and farming goes on in those areas as it does in any of Wisconsin’s richest agricultural lands.
Hopes are for another good week of planting for all, and that the forecast warmer weather starts arriving toward the end of this week to move the sprouting along.
So far, the 2020 crop year is far beyond whatever could be dreamed during the 2019 season — something positive to think about as markets struggle.
Today I raise a tall, cold glass of chocolate milk in a toast to the continue success of the 2020 growing season.
