$799 Of Their $1 Million Budget Already Gone For Dairy

It’s been a busy few weeks at the Hunger Task Force headquarters in Milwaukee. Surroundings may look a little different today since their lobby is now full of sincere thank you notes from the expanding community they find themselves serving.

Sherrie Tussler, Executive Director, spoke with Pam Jahnke of the Midwest Farm Report on how they’re quickly working through resources in the Wisconsin Dairy Recovery program recently announced between the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin and the Hunger Task Force. Initially the Hunger Task Force board committed up to $1 million to the effort. Tussler said she spent $799,000 or those dollars in the first four hours!

Now Tussler and her staff are working on writing a grant that would land them their share of federal money coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She thinks the state should qualify for around $44 million.

She’s also looking for financial donations to the Wisconsin Dairy Recovery program to match an existing donor pledging $100,000 if it’s matched! You can go to hungertaskforce.org/dairy and pledge your funds right now!

Tussler says that the impact of covid-19 will be felt for a long time. Right now she’s asking for anyone, schools, churches, idle facilities that may have refrigeration capacity anywhere in Wisconsin to get in contact with her. Many food pantries just don’t have refrigeration capacity on site. She’s also in need of transportation assistance. Any company that may have some spare vehicles that can help to deliver food goods to food pantry locations could be compensated for their costs. Again – contact the hunger task force directly to offer your assistance.

About Pam Jahnke

Getting up at 2 in the morning might shock some of her listeners, but for Pam Jahnke, it’s part of the business. Born in Northeastern Wisconsin, Pam Jahnke grew up in agriculture. Raised on her family’s 200-acre dairy farm, she learned the “farm work ethic” first hand.
