Like other bars and restaurants in Minnesota, Free Range Exchange in Hokah is continuing to adapt to restrictions set in place in wake of the Coronavirus.
Owner Benjiman Horn said Free Range Exchange is a relatively new business that was building more awareness in the community.
The café has a full coffee service with a sit-down and carryout menu that uses locally-sourced ingredients. Additionally, the café’s retail service includes grab-and-go options and seasonal produce.
“We are kind of like a farmer’s market co-op, a true local mashup of what the area has to offer,” Horn said.
Minn. Gov. Tim Walz ordered bars and restaurants close with exception to delivery or carryout services as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. The exception could help Free Range Exchange maintain some income during the health emergency.
“We can have up to five customers coming in to be able to purchase and pick up their carryout items,” Horn said. “We’re also providing curbside service.”
Horn acknowledged Free Range Exchange would see a drop in sales but was optimistic for revenue from loyal customers.
“We have a strong customer base that is showing us love by continuing to order takeout,” Horn said. “As lunch approaches, our dining service will certainly take a hit on sales.”
As commercial grocery store shelves emptied of essential items, Horn noticed the same in his café as they quickly ran out of eggs for retail. Staff started saving all egg inventory for dishes in the café. However, Horn expected a fast turnaround for the short-term problem.
“I’ve seen plenty of small and local farms still have their eggs available,” Horn said. “Moving forward, if we can stock up enough, we will continue with the retail.”
When asked for his advice for helping communities continue through the Coronavirus crisis, Horn recommended continuing to support local businesses that are still open.
“Share the wealth within the community,” Horn said. “We certainly are, and I know just seeing friends and family, they’re concerned about small businesses. If you’re able to support your community, go ahead and do that.”
