Many barns and machine sheds throughout west-central Wisconsin were destroyed or damaged Saturday and Sunday by roofs collapsing under the weight of snow. Injuries to animals and damage to machinery were involved in some of the collapses.
Eau Claire County agriculture agent Mark Hagedorn said wind such as what occurred during the weekend can contribute to buildings’ structural failures, with a twisting effect created in trusses pushing against walls from the center-out. He said raking or shoveling some of the snow from roofs can help.
Farm buildings weren’t the only structures damaged: portions of roof collapsed Sunday at Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church and at the Palladium Ballroom in Osseo.
