Due to the government shutdown, Wisconsin farmers are just now getting an idea of how prices were pacing at the end of 2018. While some of the numbers have gone up, producers are quick to point out that input costs for 2019 are higher.The December 2018 average price received by farmers for corn in Wisconsin was $3.42 per bushel according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Agricultural Prices report. This was up $0.07 from November and up $0.29 from the previous December. The December soybean price, at $8.63 per bushel, was up $0.35 from November but down $0.80 from the previous December. The December oat price was $3.26 per bushel, $0.17 above the November price and $0.67 above December 2017. All hay prices in Wisconsin averaged $179.00 per ton in December, up $3.00 from November and up $61.00 from December 2017. The alfalfa hay price averaged $186.00 per ton in December, up $6.00 from November and up $59.00 from the previous December. The other hay price averaged $155.00, down $4.00 from November but up $61.00 from the December 2017 price. The December average price was $16.00 per cwt for milk, down $0.90 from November and $1.80 below December a year ago. Prices received for milk cows for dairy herd replacement averaged $1,120 per head as of January 1, 2019.
