With the NFL draft underway – it seems appropriate that for the first time in state history – our cheesemakers have broken the 3 billion pound mark in production!
The latest numbers released by the Wisconsin Ag Statistical Service for 2015 showed Wisconsin led the nation in the number one spot with 3.07 billion pounds of total cheese produced. Increases were seen in almost every category except Swiss production.
Total American cheese production was just under a billion pounds at 909,940 million. Hispanic cheese rose from just over 71 million pounds to over 77 million in 2015. Likewise, Muenster production was up 3 million pounds to just over 60 million total.
Hot pizza cheese categories brought the biggest volume to the state. Wisconsin produced over 1.53 billion pounds of Italian and 1.05 billion pounds of Mozzarella cheese last year – a category that's still growing!
The state is home to 127 cheese plants – 37 of which each produce more than 25 million pounds of cheese.
