Over the past week, snow and rain across much of Wisconsin delayed fieldwork, but it replenished soil moisture.
According to the latest crop progress and condition report from USDA, topsoil moisture condition rated 7 percent very short, 13 percent short, 62 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 9 percent very short, 22 percent short, 59 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus.
As of April 4, most of Wisconsin was still abnormally dry, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service reports alfalfa starting to grow in Wisconsin.
Oat planting progress was 4 percent complete.
Spring tillage was 5 percent complete, six days ahead of last year and two days ahead of the 5-year average.
Pasture and range condition was 16 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 45 percent fair, 21 percent good and 4 percent excellent.
Winter wheat condition was 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 61 percent good and 11 percent excellent.
