The numbers for 2022 are in for Wisconsin potato production. Wisconsin growers saw 26.6 million hundredweight or nearly 3 billion lbs. This is down 8 percent from 2021, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service’s latest potato summary.
The state’s potato growers planted 67,000 acres, down 2,000 acres from 2021. Harvested acres in 2022 were reported at 66,500, down 1,000 acres from the previous year. Average yield per acre, at 400 hundredweight, was down 7 percent from the previous year. Price per hundredweight, at $15.60, was $2.60 above 2021. Total value of production of the state’s potato crop was $415 million in 2022, up 10 percent from 2021.
Among the other top-producing potato states, Idaho and North Dakota also saw a drop in planted potato acres between 2021 and 2022. States that saw growth in potato acres: Minnesota, Nebraska and Washington.
Wisconsin remains the third top-producing state behind Idaho and Washington. In the latest crop progress report from NASS, Wisconsin growers have harvested 72 percent of the potato crop so far. This is five days ahead of last year and four days ahead of the 5-year average.
