The world famous Budweiser Clydesdales, the symbol of quality and tradition for Anheuser-Busch since 1933, are scheduled to be a featured highlight at the 2018 World Clydesdale Show (WCS), held this October 25-28 in Madison. The eight-horse hitch will be harnessed and hitched to the famous red beer wagon during multiple exhibitions as part of the event inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center – Madison’s premier large event location.
The Budweiser Clydesdales’ appearance at the 2018 WCS is one of hundreds made annually by the traveling hitches. Horses chosen for a Budweiser Clydesdale hitch must be at least three years of age, stand approximately 18 hands – or six feet – at the shoulder, weigh an average of 2000 pounds, must be bay in color, have four white stockings, and a blaze of white on the face and black mane and tail. A gentle temperament is very important as hitch horses meet millions of people each year.
“We are excited to welcome the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales to the Alliant Energy Center,” remarked Deb Archer, President and CEO of the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau and Madison Area Sports Commission. “These majestic horses are an exciting addition to the 2018 World Clydesdale Show, and their display of power and grace will be incredible.”
“Everyone knows the Budweiser Clydesdales, and we are honored to have them aboard as a featured part of the World Clydesdale Show in Madison,” said Clydesdale Breeders of the U.S.A. Executive Director Cathy Behn. “They are a tremendous worldwide ambassador for our breed, and their exhibitions are simply breathtaking.”
WCS events are open to the ticketed public. The WCS also features over 100 competitive, best-of-breed classes. Over 600 Clydesdales are expected to take part. Competition will include hitch, halter and riding programs, showcasing the breed’s versatility and beauty. Special highlights include the crowning of the world champion six and eight-horse hitches, as well as Clydesdale jumping, dressage, and barrel racing.
Special ‘Prime Time’ events, which will include the Budweiser Clydesdale exhibitions, are scheduled to be held during the evenings of October 26 and 27, as well as the afternoon of October 28. Enthusiasts are invited to follow event preparations on the 2018 World Clydesdale Show Facebook page as further details are finalized and announced in the coming months.
Because of its size and significance, the World Clydesdale Show is held every three-four years. The first show held on U.S. soil in over 100 years also took place in Madison in 2007. Madison was again the host in 2011. The last World Clydesdale Show was held in 2015 in Canada.
