Milk production in Wisconsin during February slightly increased. According to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Milk Production report, Milk production in the badger state in February 2018 totaled 2.33 billion pounds, up less than 1 percent from 2017. The average number of milk cows during February in Wisconsin was 1.28 million head. This was the same amount of dairy cattle as January 2018 but down 5,000 from last year. Monthly production per Wisconsin cow averaged 1,830 pounds, up 10 pounds from last February.
Then when it comes to milk production in the 23 major dairy States during February it totaled 15.9 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from February 2017. The January revised production, at 17.3 billion pounds, was up 1.8 percent from January 2017. The January revision represented an increase of 9 million pounds or 0.1 percent from the preliminary production estimate. Production per cow in the 23 major States averaged 1,822 pounds for February, 23 pounds above February 2017. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major States was 8.75 million head, 49,000 head more than February 2017, and 1,000 head more than January 2018.
Milk production in the United States as a whole during February totaled 17.0 billion pounds, up 1.8 percent from February 2017. Production per cow in the United States averaged 1,807 pounds for February, 24 pounds above February 2017. The number of milk cows on farms in the United States was 9.41 million head, 45,000 head more than February 2017, and 1,000 head more than January 2018. This was the opposite trend then seen in America’s Dairyland.
