Wisconsin Continues to Rank First in Production of Processing Snap Beans

Wisconsin Continues to Rank First in Production of Processing Snap Beans

The USDA Vegetables Annual Summery is now out. According to the report, in 2017 there were 62,500 total acres of snap beans harvested in Wisconsin with a total production of 6.56 million cwt. Fresh market production of snap beans accounted for 105,000 cwt and had a value of $4.60 million. Production of snap beans for processing totaled 322,875 tons and was valued at $35.5 million. Wisconsin maintained its number one ranking in production of processing snap beans. Overall U.S. snap bean production totaled 18.0 million cwt in 2017.

Sweet corn production in Wisconsin for 2017 totaled 9.59 million cwt from 54,500 harvested acres. Fresh market production totaled 402,900 cwt and was valued at $12.4 million. Processing production accounted for 458,977 tons and had a value of $32.1 million. Wisconsin remained in third place for processing sweet corn production in 2017. U.S. sweet corn production totaled 79.3 million cwt.

Wisconsin farmers produced 967,500 cwt of green peas in 2017. There were 22,500 harvested acres. Fresh market production totaled 12,600 cwt for a total value of $4.15 million. The 47,746 tons of processing green pea production had a value of $10.2 million. Pea production in the U.S. totaled 5.37 million cwt.

In 2017 there were 2.52 million cwt of carrots produced in Wisconsin from 4,500 harvest acres. Fresh market production totaled 2,500 cwt and was valued at $278,000. Processing carrot production accounted for 125,622 tons and had a total value of $8.54 million. Nationally, carrot production totaled 30.3 million cwt.

Fifty-five hundred acres of cucumbers were harvested in Wisconsin in 2017 for a total production of 687,500 cwt. The value of production for cucumbers was $10.7 million. U.S. production of cucumbers for pickles totaled 19.9 million cwt.

Then there were 6,000 acres of cabbage harvested in Wisconsin in 2017 with a total value of production of $50.5 million. Not to mention pumpkin production in the badger state for 2017 totaled 127,400 cwt from 900 harvested acres. All pumpkins were for the fresh market and had a total value of $3.54 million.

Overall, Wisconsin continues to be one of the top producers of processing snap beans and sweet corn in the nation.
