The latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service Milk Production report is out. According to the report, milk production in Wisconsin during December 2017 totaled 2.55 billion pounds. This production rate was up 1 percent from December 2016.
The average number of milk cows in Wisconsin during December was 1.28 million head. This was 1,000 fewer head than November 2017 and 3,000 fewer than December of 2016. The monthly production per cow during December in the badger state averaged 1,995 pounds this is up 25 pounds from last December.
Then the milk production in the United States as a whole during the 2017 October to December quarter totaled 53.1 billion pounds. This was an increase of 1.1 percent from the 2016 October to December quarter.
The average number of milk cows in the United States during the same quarter was 9.40 million head. This was 3,000 head less than the 2017 July to September quarter, but 55,000 head more than the same period in 2016.
