The final reports are in for the 2016 Wisconsin potato production. According to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service – Potatoes 2016 Summary, Wisconsin potato production in 2016 totaled 27.8 million hundredweight. This is practically unchanged from the 2015 production totals.
The state’s potato growers in 2016 planted 65,000 acres, which was an increase of 2,000 acres from 2015. From the planted acreage Wisconsin potato growers harvested 64,000 acres in 2016, up 1,500 acres from the previous year.
While the acreage harvested increased the average potato yield per acre was down from 445 hundredweight in 2015 to 435 hundredweight in 2016. The price per hundredweight for the 2016 harvest came out to be $11.60, an increase from the previous year’s $9.70 per hundredweight.
The total value of production of the Wisconsin potato crop in 2016 fared well for the growers. The total value of production reached $322 million in 2016 this was an increase of $52 million from 2015.
