It’s not often that high profile celebrities decide to speak up for agriculture – but there’s a pretty new face that says she’s up to the challenge!
Betty Cantrell, Miss America 2016, has decided to use her agricultural roots in Georgia as a platform for all her public appearances. Cantrell has announced she’s working with the American Farm Bureau Federation to promote healthy lifestyles through her Healthy Children, Strong America platform. Cantrell says that understanding where food comes from is the first step in healthy living. “Farm Bureau was the perfect partnership to make in helping get us into school classrooms to encourage healthy eating,” Cantrell said.
Cantrell said her message won’t only be about healthy eating – but also all the faces behind where that food comes from! ” Nobody ever see’s farmers, nobody sees all the work they do. People just picture Old McDonald.” Cantrell continues, “I don’t think the modern farmer and his family are appreciated for everything they do.”
Cantrell grew up on a Georgia farm. She says her platform will promote agriculture while connecting modern farmers with classrooms across America. She says her program aims to teach children where their food comes from and to build an appreciation for healthy foods that are grown on the farm.
Miss America will be attending Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer and Rancher Conference February 15-16 promoting her Healthy Children, Strong America platform.
