In a dangerous profession where income is not always guaranteed, a recent study found that the majority of farm families are worried about major medical expenses – more specifically, how medical debts could threaten their farm businesses.

Florence Becot, Rural Sociologist and Associate Research Scientist for the National Farm Medicine Center, says they surveyed over 1,200 farmers in 10 different states in a widespread study.

More than half of the farmers surveyed stated that they had a job off the farm, and health insurance was the top reason for seeking out other sources of income.

Some farmers have stopped visiting their doctors for preventative care, Becot says, over fear of large medical expenses they cannot afford. Not only is that impacting their health now, but could also lead to worse issues in the long run.
