After much discussion, the Crawford County Board of Supervisors passed a one-year moratorium against livestock operations with more than 1,000 animal units Tuesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vote passed 10 to 7, according to the Crawford Stewardship Project. Members of the group encouraged taking a year to study the impact of CAFOs on citizen health, safety and welfare. They said the issue was raised because of a 10,000 animal-unit pig CAFO proposed on a ridge overlooking the Kickapoo River. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Crawford County Board is scheduled to discuss a recommendation from the Land Conservation Committee to enact a one-year moratorium against livestock operations with more than 1,000 animal units Tuesday at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In an email to producers, the Wisconsin Dairy Alliance (WDA) said the American Public Health Association established a new policy advising the implementation of moratoriums against concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) at the local, state and federal government levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“At the time, we were concerned this latest engagement of fear-mongering and scare tactics would give anti-agriculture activists more incentive to target additional towns and counties in our state. Based on testimony given in support of the moratorium in Crawford County, this is exactly what is happening.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The moratorium recommendation passed the Crawford County Land Conservation Committee 3-1, according to the WDA. The alliance encouraged farmers and allied industries to attend the meeting to stop the moratorium from passing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There is no doubt that the anti-agriculture activists will be present at the meeting, voicing their opinion and not science-based facts. Without a counter from the livestock industry, this moratorium could pass.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WDA said to its knowledge, this is the first time a county land conservation committee has been involved with and voted on implementing such moratoriums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Kickapoo Stewards and Crawford Stewardship Project supported the moratorium and said this is a water safety issue putting the future of Crawford County at stake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Will it stay a pristine area with family farms and natural beauty, or become overrun with CAFOs, with polluted waters and dying small towns?” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Crawford County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to meet and discuss the moratorium Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Crawford County Administrative Building in Prairie du Chien, room 236. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
